Chapter I · The Route
Beginning at the courthouse steps where sentences were read aloud to the assembled town, this expedition follows the route the condemned walked on their last morning — past the gaol, the powder magazine, and out toward the gallows field.
Our historians draw on county court records, gaol ledgers, and parish burial books to reconstruct the lives behind the sentences: pirates, forgers, and the wrongly accused whose names the broadsheets never printed correctly.
